The 2025 REU Program is contingent on funding from the National Science Foundation. Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Applicants must be enrolled as an undergraduate during the REU program, and they must not attend classes or hold outside employment during the term of their internships.
Students who are members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences are particularly encouraged to apply. Students with disabilities are also encouraged to apply, first contact ABEH and select REU program in the subject dropdown to discuss their specific needs with the program directors.
This year, we are using the National Science Foundation’s application system, called ETAP, for the first time.
This is a little more involved than our former system, so here are a few guidelines to help you through. The application process has 3 stages:
Stage 1: create an NSF account https://etap.nsf.gov/applicant-info. Once they email you a temporary password, sign in with the option that requires NSF credentials. You will be asked to choose a method of 3rd party authentication. If you are used to doing this through one of the choices, like Google, please do so. We have had success by downloading an app called Okta Verify, which is one of the choices.
Stage 2: Registering in the ETAP system. ETAP will ask you for some information on yourself and your education. This information can be used to apply to any REU program that is in the ETAP system. Please note that many of these questions are labeled ‘optional’, so you can choose whether to answer them or not.
Stage 3: The application for our program! Here, there are some redundant questions about name, address, etc. There are also questions about which faculty members you would like to work with, a request for a personal statement and past experiences, etc. We were having some problems with writers of letters of recommendation being able to upload letters, so you should not need those at this stage, but we may ask for them later.
If you encounter any difficulties with this process, please let us know, and we will assist you as best we can. The contact address for IT help with ETAP is etaphelp@nsf.gov.
